Massachusetts researchers develop new technologies for desalination

The lack of freshwater resources has become a common problem faced by all countries. Obtaining fresh water from vast oceans is of great significance in solving the freshwater crisis. A few days ago, researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology developed a new technique that uses desorption electrodialysis to desalinate seawater.

Electrodialysis is the transmission of electrolyte ions between the two streams. This method uses electrodialysis to separate the sewage or seawater into two streams, making it a natural barrier. MIT researchers flow water through a cheap porous material made of tiny glass particles and pass through ion exchange membranes or electrodes on both sides. Brine or sewage will be divided into multiple salt areas and low salt areas under the action of a DC electric field.

As the current through the brine increases, shock waves will be generated between the two zones, effectively forming a physical barrier separating the brine and fresh water.

In the course of participating in the research, the researchers stated that the technology can be applied to the desalination and purification of seawater in large scale in the future, and the next step is to carry out field tests in a wider range.

Earlier this year, researchers at the University of Alexandria, Egypt, announced a new low-cost desalination membrane technology, but the commercial viability of the method has not yet been confirmed.
