Effect of Extrusion Ratio on Microstructure and Properties of 6063 Aluminum Alloy

At the same time, because of its good electrical and thermal conductivity, it is also widely used as a heat sink for computer CPUs. Since the main product of the 6063 aluminum alloy on the market is extruded profiles, selecting the appropriate extrusion ratio plays an important role in improving the performance of the product. This paper mainly analyzes the effect of extrusion ratio on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the alloy, and provides basis for improving the 6063 alloy extrusion process and improving the product quality of the aluminum alloy.

The 6063 aluminum alloy is prepared from pure aluminum ingots, pure magnesium and Al-Si intermediate alloys, and the alloy composition is (mass fraction, %):

0.43Si, 0.001Cu, 0.701Mg, 0.005Zn, 0.071Ti, 0.17Fe, 0.001Mn, balance Al.

The smelted 6063 aluminum solution was poured into Φ120mm aluminum rods, and after homogenization at 560°C for 6 hours, the aluminum rods were heated to 460°C and put on a 600t extruder and extruded at different extrusion ratios into solid round bars. The extrusion ratios were 32.7 (A), 39.05 (B), 49 (C), 59.55 (D), 68.64 (E), respectively. After the extrusion, the solid round rod obtained was subjected to an aging treatment of 200° C.×2 h.

The extrusion ratio affects the microstructure of the alloy and the size of the main strengthening phase Mg2Si in the alloy. As the extrusion ratio increases, the grain size of the alloy decreases and the Mg2Si grain size in the alloy decreases and the density increases. With the increase of extrusion ratio, the density of the strengthening phase in the alloy is greater and the distribution is more uniform, and the tensile strength, elongation and hardness of the alloy are all increased.
