"‘My dream is the dream of food security in our country!’" said Yuan Longping, the renowned father of hybrid rice, during an interview with reporters at the 12th session of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) yesterday. In his conversation, he shared his insights on the current state and future direction of China’s food security, painting a more vivid picture of what he envisions as the “beautiful Chinese dream.â€
In Yuan’s view, there is still a long way to go when it comes to achieving real food security, especially in terms of per-mu grain production. "For many years, my main focus has been on the research and development of hybrid rice," he explained. "We achieved the goal of 900 kilograms per mu in the third phase of hybrid rice in 2011, and now we are working toward reaching 1,000 kilograms per mu." While 1,000 kg may sound simple, he admitted that it is a tough challenge. However, he remains confident about its feasibility.
Nowadays, Yuan often visits the fields himself. "Books and computer technology are important, but you can’t grow rice from books or computers," he said. "Rice only grows in the fields, so I have to go out there and see it with my own eyes."
"I have two dreams," he continued with a warm smile. "The first is that rice will grow as tall as sorghum, with panicles as long as a broom and grains as big as peanuts. The second is to achieve the goal of 1,000 kilograms per mu as soon as possible. These are my dreams — the dream of food security for China." His words reflected not just personal ambition, but a deep sense of responsibility and hope for the future of the nation.
