"‘My dream is the dream of food security in our country!’ said Yuan Longping, the renowned father of hybrid rice, during an interview with reporters at the 12th session of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) yesterday. While there were no formal party discussions among private sector members, Yuan shared his insights on China’s current food security situation and its future direction, painting a vivid picture of what he envisions as the ‘beautiful Chinese dream.’
In Yuan’s view, although China has made significant progress in food production, there is still a long way to go. He emphasized that per-mu grain output remains a critical challenge. “My main focus has always been on hybrid rice research. We achieved the goal of 900 kilograms per mu in the third phase of hybrid rice in 2011, and now we are striving for 1,000 kilograms per mu.†Reaching this target sounds simple, but it is anything but easy. However, Yuan remains confident in his team’s ability to achieve it.
These days, Yuan often spends time in the fields. “Books and computers are important tools,†he said, “but you can’t grow rice from books or computers. Rice only grows in the fields, so I have to be out there working with the farmers.â€
Yuan also shared his personal dreams. “I have two dreams,†he said with a smile. “The first is that rice will grow as tall as sorghum, with panicles as long as a broom and grains as big as peanuts. The second is to reach 1,000 kilograms per mu as soon as possible. This is my dream — the dream of food security for China.â€
His words reflect not just scientific ambition, but a deep commitment to ensuring that every citizen has enough to eat. As he continues his work, Yuan Longping remains a symbol of perseverance, innovation, and hope for a more secure and prosperous future for China.
