When comparing rolling bearings with sliding bearings, the friction torque can be calculated using the inner diameter of the bearing. The formula is as follows:
**M = (μ × P × d) / 2**
Where:
- **M** is the friction torque in N·mm
- **μ** is the friction coefficient (refer to Table 1)
- **P** is the bearing load in Newtons
- **d** is the nominal inner diameter of the bearing in millimeters
The friction coefficient (μ) is influenced by several factors such as the type of bearing, load, speed, and lubrication method. For stable rotation under normal conditions, the reference values for the friction coefficient are provided in Table 1.
For plain bearings, the typical range of μ is between 0.01 and 0.02, although it can sometimes go up to 0.1 or 0.2 depending on the application.
Here is a list of the friction coefficients for different types of bearings:
| Bearing Type | Friction Coefficient (μ) |
|-----------------------------|---------------------------|
| Deep Groove Ball Bearings | 0.0010 – 0.0015 |
| Angular Contact Ball Bearings | 0.0012 – 0.0020 |
| Self-Aligning Ball Bearings | 0.0008 – 0.0012 |
| Cylindrical Roller Bearings | 0.0008 – 0.0012 |
| Full Complement Needle Bearings | 0.0025 – 0.0035 |
| Needle Bearings with Cage | 0.0020 – 0.0030 |
| Tapered Roller Bearings | 0.0017 – 0.0025 |
| Spherical Roller Bearings | 0.0020 – 0.0025 |
| Thrust Ball Bearings | 0.0010 – 0.0015 |
| Thrust Spherical Roller Bearings | 0.0020 – 0.0025 |
Understanding the friction coefficient is essential for selecting the right bearing for your application. It directly affects the performance, efficiency, and lifespan of the bearing. Proper lubrication and maintenance can significantly reduce the friction coefficient and improve overall system performance.
