On the 10th, the State Council held a press conference to discuss China's foreign trade performance in the first quarter of this year. Zheng Yuesheng, spokesperson for the General Administration of Customs and director of the General Statistics Department, highlighted that although the global economy has shown signs of recovery, the growth remains modest. Meanwhile, the domestic economy continues to operate steadily.
Zheng emphasized that since last year, a series of policy measures aimed at supporting stable growth in foreign trade have been gradually taking effect. As a result, China's foreign trade has continued its upward trend from the fourth quarter of last year, maintaining steady growth in the first quarter of this year.
According to customs data, China's total foreign trade volume reached 6.12 trillion yuan (approximately 974.67 billion U.S. dollars) in the first quarter. After adjusting for exchange rate fluctuations, this represents a year-on-year increase of 13.4%. Exports totaled 3.2 trillion yuan (about 508.87 billion U.S. dollars), rising by 18.4%, while imports amounted to 2.9 trillion yuan (around 465.8 billion U.S. dollars), increasing by 8.4%. This led to a trade surplus of 270.5 billion yuan, or roughly 43.07 billion U.S. dollars, compared to just 210 million U.S. dollars in the same period last year.
The strong performance reflects the effectiveness of government policies and the resilience of China's export-driven economy. Analysts suggest that continued support for small and medium enterprises, as well as efforts to expand trade partnerships, will be key to sustaining this momentum in the coming months.
