**Technology Trends: A New Approach to Prevent Fatigue Driving**
In China, fatigue driving is a major cause of traffic accidents, ranking as the second leading cause. Despite numerous studies aimed at preventing this dangerous behavior, previous solutions have not been fully effective. Recently, American scientists have introduced a new method using steering wheel detection technology to monitor and prevent fatigue driving, which has shown promising results after multiple trials.
Although China’s motor vehicle population accounts for only 1.9% of the world's total, it contributes to 15% of global traffic fatalities. For several years in a row, China has had the highest number of road traffic deaths worldwide, with fatigue driving being a significant factor. (Note: Data may not be up-to-date.)
An effective fatigue monitoring system can significantly reduce these incidents. Earlier attempts included wearable devices that could alert drivers when they were becoming drowsy. Major car manufacturers like Ford, Volkswagen, and Volvo have also developed systems that monitor the driver's mental state. However, these systems rely on the driver's own reaction, which is not always reliable.
Recently, researchers at Washington State University Pocan introduced a novel solution: using the steering wheel to detect and prevent fatigue-related dangers. In their experiment, 29 participants completed a psychomotor vigilance task (PVT) over 10 consecutive days. Afterward, they performed four 30-minute driving tasks on a simulator. The team collected detailed data, including 87 different metrics such as speed, acceleration, steering wheel rotation, and lane position.
To ensure accuracy, another group of 12 participants underwent the same PVT test during the day. The research revealed that steering wheel movement and lane position were the most accurate indicators of driver fatigue. These data could predict the vehicle’s trajectory and reflect the driver’s mental condition. Based on this, the team developed a "vigilance monitoring system." If the system detects fatigue, it automatically lowers the window, plays music, and helps the driver regain focus.
Currently, most fatigue monitoring systems fall into two categories: those based on infrared and facial tracking, and those based on driver behavior or vehicle movement. The former uses eye-tracking technology to detect drowsiness, while the latter monitors driving patterns. For example, BYD’s BAWS system uses the first method.
Many car companies use camera-based lane departure systems to detect if a driver is distracted. However, these systems are often expensive and unreliable under certain conditions, such as low light, curved roads, or faded lane markings.
The new steering wheel monitoring technology is more affordable and easier to install. The research team hopes to integrate it into new vehicles and later sell it as an aftermarket product. Although still in the research phase, Professor Van has already filed a patent with another researcher, Forsman, and believes the technology will soon reach the market.
“We want to find a better way to detect driver fatigue and prevent accidents before they happen,†said Professor Van. He believes that with predictive capabilities, most drivers will avoid dangerous situations, giving them time to react and stay safe on the road.
