Mitsubishi Resins develops battery separators for high heat resistance above 200°C

Recently, Mitsubishi Plastics has developed a lithium-ion secondary battery separator that can withstand temperatures above 200°C.

Mitsubishi resin's diaphragm manufacturing method is cost-effective dry type, and filming, laminating, and stretching processes are completed in a continuous process and are characterized by excellent cost competitiveness. In addition to the diaphragm production line, Mitsubishi also developed a technology for coating high heat-resistant inorganic fillers. In this way, a separator product that can withstand 220° C. or lower can be manufactured compared with the conventional 170° C. temperature polypropylene (PP) separator.

This product will be marketed in 2012 after quality evaluation by lithium ion rechargeable battery manufacturers, and will be mass-produced from 2013. It is expected that the product will be widely used in automotive battery separators, especially PP single-layer separators for automotive applications, and high heat-resistant products requiring inorganic filler coating.
