How to View SKF Roller Bearing Grease
Applying a small amount of grease between your fingers can help identify any contaminants. If you feel something gritty, it's a sign that the grease may be contaminated. Alternatively, spread a thin layer of grease on the back of your hand and then seal it. This method can also help detect impurities in the lubricant.
When replacing the grease in a roller bearing, it’s important to first clean out the old oil using an oily smooth medium. If possible, refill with fresh oil and run the machine at low speed for a few minutes. This helps to flush out any remaining contaminants. Make sure to filter the oil before using it again to avoid introducing new particles into the system.
For SKF bearings, replace the old grease with new smooth grease. Be careful not to let any cotton fibers or foreign materials come into contact with the bearing. Residual fibers can get lodged between rolling elements and cause damage, especially in smaller bearings where this issue is more critical.
After some time in operation, the vibration and noise levels should remain stable. The frequency spectrum will typically show only one or two peaks. The presence of three times the power frequency is rare, indicating that the bearing is in good condition.
As the bearing continues to operate, it may enter the late stage of its life cycle. At this point, vibration and noise may start to increase, sometimes producing unusual sounds. However, the rate of vibration increase is usually gradual. During this time, the kurtosis value (a measure of signal sharpness) of angular contact ball bearings may suddenly rise to a certain level, which is considered an early warning sign.
At this stage, it's essential to closely monitor the SKF bearing and track any changes. As the bearing deteriorates further, the kurtosis value may drop rapidly, returning closer to normal levels. Meanwhile, vibration and noise levels will increase significantly. When the vibration exceeds the specified limits—such as those outlined in ISO 2372—the kurtosis value will also rise sharply. At this point, the bearing is likely in the late stages of failure and should be replaced promptly to prevent further damage.
Bearings in the late stages of failure often exhibit severe issues such as shaft damage, burning, cracks, raceway wear, or cage wear. These problems can escalate quickly, especially in larger equipment or high-speed applications. Therefore, once late-stage fault characteristics are detected during SKF bearing diagnosis, it's crucial to replace the bearing immediately to avoid costly downtime.
