According to Xinhua News Agency, in the afternoon of June 9th, in a cow breeding base in the outskirts of Hohhot, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, when a newly born genetically modified “low-lactose dairy cow” calf was in its midst, it was playing with its companions in a large bullpen and drilling from time to time. According to Prof. Zhang Li, one of the leaders of animal biotechnology major projects at the Life Sciences Academy of Inner Mongolia Agricultural University, the transgenic burdock named “Lax” was born on April 24, 2012 and is currently healthy.

Zhang Li said that in May 2011, their research team extracted fibroblasts from a fetus that was 45 days pregnant with a black-and-white cow, and then used a transfection procedure in the laboratory to transfer the lactase gene to the cell. In the next step, a cloned bovine embryo containing a trans- lactolytic enzyme gene was constructed; in July 2011, it was transplanted into a recipient cow and allowed it to successfully conceive. After 283 days of pregnancy, the recipient cows were normally delivered and the "Lax" was born.

“Lactose decomposing enzyme can break down lactose into galactose and glucose that are used by anyone.” Zhang Li said that some people in the population are unable to drink fresh milk because of lack of lactase. The reason is that milk contains lactose. . When the lactase level in the human body is lacking, the lactose in the fresh milk cannot be absorbed, utilized and fermented in the intestine, and thus a large amount of carbon dioxide is generated, causing bloating, abdominal pain, stomach discomfort, and indigestion. Therefore, this part of the people stays away from milk. The birth of "low-lactose dairy cows" is expected to provide "relaxed milk" to people suffering from "lactose intolerance".

Zhang Li said that the tests they performed on "Lax" showed that the lactase enzyme factor has been fully expressed in its body. After it is 25 months old and after normal calving, low lactose milk can be produced.

The team led by Zhou Huanmin, a professor at Inner Mongolia Agricultural University, carried out a total of 14 cows with embryo transfer of lactose decomposing enzyme gene in the past year. Three months of pregnancy examined 7 pregnant women and the pregnancy rate was as high as 50%. In April 2012, five communist calves passed their pregnancies and the calving rate reached 36%. After identification, three of the five burdock frogs successfully expressed the lactose degrading enzyme gene, but the other two died within 24 hours of birth.

Zhou Huanmin said that the utilization prospects of “low-lactose dairy cows” are considerable. They can produce new varieties of dairy cows that do not contain lactose or low-lactose milk, which will inevitably produce significant economic and social benefits.
