In the current flooring market, many businesses promote their products as "zero formaldehyde" to attract eco-conscious consumers. However, most people believe this is just a marketing tactic. A few customers, though, do acknowledge the claim and feel it reflects a genuine effort by the company. According to industry experts, the term "zero formaldehyde" is misleading. In reality, it's nearly impossible to produce any type of floor with absolutely no formaldehyde, given the materials used in manufacturing.
Currently, the only accurate statement is that some brands have formaldehyde levels significantly lower than the national standards. This means they can be considered environmentally friendly, but not truly "zero." Many flooring salespeople use terms like "antibacterial," "E0-rated," or "green technology" to highlight their product's benefits. These buzzwords often make it difficult for average consumers to tell the difference between real environmental claims and exaggerated advertising.
For example, one wooden floor seller claimed to use U.S. AF purification technology, stating that their product is antibacterial, moisture-resistant, and even "formaldehyde-free." However, experts point out that such claims are not backed by clear regulations or testing standards. The Chinese market currently lacks official guidelines for antibacterial flooring, which allows manufacturers to use these labels without proper verification.
According to Cao Liyun, secretary-general of the Tianjin Environmental Decoration Association, there are only four main types of wood flooring available: solid wood, laminate, composite, and bamboo. None of them can truly be labeled as "zero formaldehyde." Laminate floors contain plastic components, and even solid wood floors have paint that may release formaldehyde. Therefore, the best consumers can expect is low-formaldehyde content, not complete absence.
Consumers are advised to purchase from reputable stores and ask for inspection reports from authorized institutions. It’s also important to include detailed information about the flooring in the purchase contract to protect their rights in case of disputes. With so many misleading claims circulating, being informed and cautious when buying flooring is more important than ever.
