On April 16, 2013, the 5th Executive Director (Expansion) Meeting of the 4th China Superhard Materials Association took place in Huangshan City, Anhui Province. During the event, Li Zhihong, the Secretary-General of the association, delivered a comprehensive report titled "Interpretation of Economic Operation Data of the Superhard Materials Industry." The meeting brought together industry leaders and experts to discuss the current state and future direction of the sector.
In his speech, Li highlighted that while global economic growth remained sluggish and domestic economic expansion slowed down, the superhard materials industry still maintained double-digit growth. This high-speed development was seen as a positive sign despite the challenges posed by weak market demand both domestically and internationally.
One key point raised was the decline in diamond exports, marking the second such drop since 2009. Export volumes and prices fell, while imports surged, with import unit prices rising significantly. The price gap between imported and exported diamonds reached 3.7 times, reflecting the ongoing challenges faced by Chinese manufacturers in competing at the high end of the market.
Despite efforts to promote China's advancements in diamond technology, the country’s products are largely confined to the low-end segment, with high-end markets still dominated by developed nations. Structural adjustments in product lines were emphasized as a top priority for the industry.
Meanwhile, the export of grinding wheels and saw blades showed some improvement, though the gap between domestic and international markets remained significant. The unit price ratio for saw blades stood at 2.2 times, a slight reduction from previous years, but still far from parity. For turning tools, the ratio was as high as 135.5 times, indicating a massive disparity that underscores the need for innovation and quality improvement.
Looking ahead, the long-term prospects for the industry remain promising. However, short-term support is lacking, and the sector must focus on R&D, technological upgrades, and continuous innovation to stay competitive. Understanding market trends, identifying gaps, and investing in differentiated products are essential strategies for latecomers to succeed.
The meeting concluded with a strong call to avoid盲目 construction (blind construction), overexpansion, and repetitive production. These practices could lead to serious consequences if not addressed. The importance of strategic planning and sustainable development was clearly emphasized.
