New Meteorological Technologies Can Monitor Sugar Yield

The China Meteorological Administration’s new meteorological and new technology promotion project, “Sugar Yield Monitoring and Forecasting Service System for Sugar Cane Production Provinces in China,” was recently accepted by experts.

The project was hosted by the Guangxi Autonomous Region and the three provinces of Hainan, Guangdong and Yunnan participated in the project. The project team developed a sugarcane production monitoring and forecasting service system for sugarcane production in China, established sugarcane production data, conventional meteorological data, EOS/MODIS remote sensing data comprehensive database of sugarcane producing provinces in China, and determined the impact on sugarcane yield and sugar content. The main meteorological impact factors and key periods; establishment of weather forecasting models for sugar cane production and sugar content; development of Guangxi sugarcane intelligence expert decision-making termbase and decision support service back-end support system. The related products have been published in real time in the provincial, city and county-level agricultural websites.

This project made use of the multi-temporal EOS/MODIS remote sensing data to obtain important results in the identification, extraction and application of the spatial distribution information of sugarcane planting. Based on this, it carried out the estimation of sugarcane planting area, the growth of sugar cane, and the remote sensing of drought monitoring. Other meteorological services have achieved remarkable business and social benefits.
