Scientists develop inexpensive FeNi magnets that are completely free of rare earth elements

The research team of Tohoku University in Japan announced on November 17, 2015 that they successfully developed FeNi magnets that are completely free of rare earth elements such as Sm, Dy, and Nd.
The "Ultra Low Loss Magnetic Core Material Technology Group" led by Prof. Makino Makino of the school successfully completed this research. The related paper was published in the UK's well-known scientific journal on November 16, 2015 . "Scientific Reports".
The biggest issue in this study is how to develop a high-performance magnet that does not depend on rare earths. In the 1960s, it was discovered that the slow cooling of space formed in the natural meteorite would contain traces of Fe-Ni magnets, which have similar magnet characteristics to neodymium magnets, but are believed to take billions of years to form due to their formation. It is impossible to make it by hand in a short time.
The researchers created a Fe-Ni semi-metal alloy by replacing Fe in Fe-Si-BP-Cu series nanocrystalline soft magnetic alloy Nanomate with Ni , and then using the alloy to freeze the liquid and cause disordered atomic sequences. The metal is heat-treated and nanocrystallized to obtain a rare earth element-free FeNi magnet.
The crystallization speed of amorphous metals is extremely fast, which also shortens the formation time of Fe-Ni in natural vermiculite, which needs to consume billions of years, to 300 hours. In addition, because the magnet does not contain other expensive elements, the raw material cost is relatively low.
The research team stated that in the future, this magnet will be used as a new substance to conduct research on basic physical properties, magnetic properties, etc., and strive to expand its development potential as a practical material.
