The National Science and Technology Support Program for Major Research Project jointly established by the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Department of Science and Technology of Shandong Province launched the “Super Corn Variety Breeding and Industrialization Development” project, which was launched in Jinan City, Shandong Province on the 19th. According to calculations, if the annual expansion of 4000 mu of super corn is promoted, the annual corn production in China will increase by 6 billion kg, equivalent to an additional 15 million mu of cultivated land.

Corn is one of the four major food crops in the world. The planting area and output ranks first among the autumn crops in China. The total output accounts for 24% of the total grain output in China. Corn is not only an important raw material for the feed and food industry, but also the basis for the livestock husbandry industry. With the rise and growth of the bioenergy industry worldwide, corn has become an important bioenergy crop. At present, the yield and quality of China's main maize varieties cannot meet the needs of agricultural production development. The efficiency of corn breeding needs to be further improved. Launching the "super maize variety selection and industrialization development" project is a major measure to ensure national food security, sustainable agricultural development, and participation in international competition under the new situation.

Super-maize is a special crop variety with the main objective of super-high yield, combining high-quality, multi-resistance, wide-fitness, and easy-to-produce varieties. Super corn has five indicators: First, super-high yield, a small area of ​​more than 1 mu high-yield farmland to reach more than 1,000 kilograms; second, high-quality, to reach the national standard two or more; three is widely suitable for different corn ecological planting; four It is multi-resistance, resistance to various diseases and insect pests and a variety of unfavorable ecological factors; Fifth, it is easy to produce seeds, and the seed output reaches more than 500 kg/mu.

This project is chief expert of China's well-known corn breeding and high-yielding cultivation expert Li Denghai. The project's total funding is 87.46 million yuan, of which the state allocates 37.46 million yuan, and the project research period is 2007-2010.
