Murata Manufacturing develops 90% battery charge for 6 minutes

Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd. displayed the ultra-compact high-power lithium-ion battery that the company is developing at the "6th Japan International Automotive Electronics Technology Exhibition" (January 15-17th, 2014, Tokyo Ariake International Convention and Exhibition Center). Transportation. The battery can achieve a maximum discharge of 100A and can be charged 90% in 6 minutes. In terms of life, if it is charged and discharged once a day at room temperature, it can be used for 10 years.

Murata believes that the lithium-ion battery market, which is mainly determined by capacity and price, is expected to further expand through the advantages of output power and lifespan. In addition to ultra-small vehicles, the company also aims to include scooter, unmanned conveyors, elevators, fixed storage systems, and uninterrupted power supplies.

This time, as one of the applications that can take advantage of the rapid charging/discharging speed and long life of new battery products, Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd. exhibited ultra-small-sized vehicles that are driven by motors. This ultra-miniature vehicle is a prototype ZieD α1 developed by the venture company ZieD. The concept is “the appearance of the smallest size of the two people required to move”. Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd. will start mass production of the battery equipped with the car in April 2015. ZieD plans to launch ZieD α1 to the market in 2015.

Murata Manufacturing will use the company’s main product, laminated ceramic capacitor manufacturing technology, for mass production of this battery. In the production of laminated ceramic capacitors, there is a process that accurately overlays the thin ceramic plates before sintering. Instead of winding the positive and negative electrodes, the new type of lithium battery cells adopts an overlapping structure, so that the existing technology can be used.

For high output power batteries, Toshiba’s SCiB (Super Charge Ion Battery) products were previously available, but Murata’s battery voltage is 3.2V, which reduces the number of units required to obtain the same voltage. Murata intends to use this new product to enter the “environment, energy market” that the company has positioned as a key market. (Reporter: Mitsubishi often, "Nikkei Electronics")
