NASA is expected to launch a new nuclear reactor by 2022 to provide space exploration

Space.com reported that the U.S. Department of Energy believes that it can prepare a nuclear reactor to support launching in 2022. If all goes well, it can deploy before NASA sends humans to the moon and Mars.

Patrick McClure, head of the Kilopower project, said in a July speech: "I think three years is a very viable goal. We can do this within three years and prepare for the launch."

The US Department of Energy believes that providing nuclear fission-based reaction energy in space is not much different from that on Earth. We only need to use the heat generated by the fission of the atomic nucleus and convert it into electrical energy with the help of a generator.

Although the efficiency of the early mechanical energy conversion was still relatively limited (the Kilopower reactor tested was only 30% efficient), its output power was far better than the nuclear power batteries used in many NASA probes (such as the Mars probe).

The agency estimates that nuclear power reactors using Kilopower technology can provide at least 1 kilowatt of electricity, and the estimated service life is 15 years. It is enough to provide stable energy support for a large number of tasks that need to be executed for a long time, and play an important role in other tasks.
