Recycling is definitely a useful process. If modern society is to achieve almost complete sustainability, then recycling may be a necessary process. However, this is not perfect-as Ensivo pointed out, recycling is not effective for all types of materials. Some metals, such as aluminum, can be easily melted and reused, with little loss of material.
On the other hand, the situation with recycled plastics is completely different. As Ensivo pointed out, most plastics tend to retain their previous shape in some way when recycled, which means that plastic bottles cannot be easily melted and turned into fiberglass. This is because plastics are composed of monomers, which form polymers when they are combined. Obviously, it is very difficult to extract the raw material monomer alone.
Researchers at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) seem to have found a solution to this problem. According to Ensivo, these scientists are using "triones" and "amines" to build different types of polymers.
Using acids and other chemical processes, the researchers were able to "weave" the flame-retardant glass fiber into TK-6 powder, a piece of fiber and a flame-retardant "additive." Although it is unclear whether this process is completely non-destructive, it seems to be quite close. In any case, this is undoubtedly a major achievement in the recycling industry.
The researchers hope that the materials obtained from this extraction process can be used to create any new type of plastic.
