Jiangsu Yangon Group officially shut down its dicofol production line on the 17th of last month, marking the end of dicofol manufacturing in China. This decision reflects growing environmental and health concerns surrounding the chemical. Dicofol, also known as Triclosan or Kailesan, is a solid compound in its pure form. When formulated into a 20% emulsifiable concentrate, it appears as a pale yellow to reddish-brown transparent oily liquid. It is widely used as a broad-spectrum acaricide, effective against adult mites, nymphs, and eggs. Dicofol is stable under acidic conditions but degrades quickly in alkaline environments.
It is considered a low-toxicity acaricide, posing minimal risk to humans and animals, while being relatively safe for beneficial insects. It is commonly used to control mites on cotton, fruit trees, and ornamental plants due to its strong efficacy and affordability. However, its production involves the use of DDT as an intermediate, leading to residual contamination that can harm both the environment and human health. This has raised significant concerns among environmental agencies and regulators.
In April 2007, China approved the “China Implementation of the Stockholm Convention National Implementation Plan,†which outlined a strategy to gradually phase out the production of dicofol. The move aligns with global efforts to eliminate persistent organic pollutants (POPs) that pose long-term risks to ecosystems and public health. As a result, the closure of the Jiangsu Yangon Group's facility marks a major step in China’s commitment to reducing harmful pesticide use and protecting the environment for future generations.
