A 5-meter by 3-meter sign has been installed at the edge of the fairway, standing 2.7 meters above the ground and covered with reflective film. At night, the text on the sign glows with white light, which is emitted from the top. The sign is equipped with solar panels that charge during the day and power the illumination at night. Recently, this self-developed solar-powered active luminescent sign, developed by the city's waterway department, was officially put into use along the Suxi Line channel. It acts like a "reflective vest" for the waterway, helping guide ships safely through the night.
According to Chen Guangjie, head of the Navigation Department at the Municipal Waterway Administration Division, one of the main challenges for vessels navigating at night is the lack of clear reference points and visibility of shore signs. This new solar-powered sign provides clear navigational information, especially when visibility is poor. The Suxi Line sign is the first active luminescent sign of its kind in the province’s inland waterways. Its working principle is straightforward: solar panels collect energy during the day and power the lights at night.
The sign is located on the right bank of the Suxi Line channel, 80 meters from Wufu Bridge, marking the route to Wuxi and Wujiang. From a distance, it stands out against the green background with a white frame and a diagonal red pole. At the top of the sign, there are five groups of ten solar panels. According to Chen, once fully charged, the sign can operate for up to 18 days, even on cloudy days. The sign measures 4.95 meters by 3.3 meters and is covered with 3M engineering-grade reflective film. Its bottom edge is 2.7 meters above the ground, with a visibility range of 200 meters during the day. At night, the visibility is even greater.
Although the design seems simple, the cost is not insignificant—each unit costs around 100,000 yuan. Chen mentioned that the department will now collect data and gather feedback from boat operators to evaluate the sign’s technical performance and cost-effectiveness. If everything checks out, they plan to gradually expand its use to other urban waterways, benefiting more vessels in the future.
