The Nankang furniture industry began in the early 1990s. Over more than two decades of development, it has grown from scratch, expanding from small-scale operations to large enterprises, evolving from rough production to refined craftsmanship, and shifting from a single product line to a diversified structure. Today, it has established a complete industrial pattern that includes manufacturing, sales, distribution, and professional collaboration. Nankang has become a key economic driver in the Southern Jiangsu region, with its furniture base standing out as a bright spot in local development.
A recent trend in the industry is the so-called "Three Noes" miracle. Ten years ago, Liu Xiaocheng returned to Nankang from Dongguan and started a small furniture factory with just a few workers, a handful of machines, and a 100-square-meter building. Today, his company generates nearly 10 million yuan in annual sales. Liu is one of thousands of returnees who have contributed to the growth of the industry. According to data from the Nankang Furniture Industry Promotion Bureau, by the end of 2011, the industry employed around 150,000 directly and over 100,000 indirectly, accounting for about one-third of the city's population and labor force. There were 5,690 furniture companies in Nankang, with total output reaching 8.08 billion yuan and sales revenue of 7.96 billion yuan in 2011. In July 2011, Nankang was awarded the title of "Central China Furniture Industry Base" by the China Furniture Association.
In recent years, the Nankang furniture industry has grown at an average annual rate of over 30%, hitting a historical high of 88% in the last year. However, the industry faces challenges: Nankang lacks abundant wood resources, skilled labor, and design talent. A local researcher humorously calls it a "three noes" industry—no raw materials, no labor, and no design. Most of the wood used comes from abroad, and the workforce has grown significantly due to the industry’s expansion. The population has now exceeded one million, and many returnees brought capital, technology, and sales networks back with them.
The brand furniture industry has played a major role in boosting Nankang’s economy. Average monthly salaries in the sector exceed 3,000 yuan, with skilled workers earning over 6,000 yuan. Total wages in the industry reached over 3 billion yuan. In 2009, Su Rong, then secretary of the Jiangxi Provincial Party Committee, proposed that Nankang be developed into a national-level furniture market. With furniture industries in nearby regions like Guangdong relocating inland, and the national furniture sector undergoing transformation, Nankang is presented with significant opportunities.
However, the industry still faces internal and external challenges. Many enterprises started as family-run workshops, characterized by scattered layouts, small scale, and limited efficiency. Most produce low-end products with little innovation or brand recognition. Companies often lack investment in R&D, marketing, and talent, leading to weak internal motivation and heavy reliance on external factors. Environmental issues also persist due to inadequate pollution control and irregular factory layouts.
Externally, competition is fierce. Industrial parks in Chengdu, Anhui, Hubei, and Guizhou are much larger and better-equipped, posing a challenge to Nankang’s sustainable growth. To address these issues, Nankang has taken advantage of regional revitalization efforts to develop long-term strategies for upgrading the industry. It has focused on improving quality, affordability, and practicality, while accelerating the construction of furniture industrial parks and migrant worker entrepreneurship zones.
The "National Solid Wood Furniture Industry Famous Brand Creation Demonstration Zone" is currently being planned. The Nankang Furniture Industry Promotion Bureau aims to set higher standards, enhance technological capabilities, and improve the reputation of Nankang furniture. A professional furniture market covering 800 acres and 750,000 square meters is under construction, positioning Nankang among the top furniture markets in the country.
