The Nankang furniture industry began in the early 1990s. Over more than two decades of development, it has grown from scratch, expanding from small-scale operations to large production, from rough processing to refined craftsmanship, and from a single product line to a diversified structure. It has gradually formed an industrial pattern that includes manufacturing, sales, distribution, and professional coordination. As a result, Nankang has become a prominent economic hub in Southern Jiangsu.
**The "Three No" Miracle**
Ten years ago, Liu Xiaocheng returned to his hometown of Nankang from Dongguan and started a small furniture factory. At the time, there were only a few workers, a handful of machines, and a factory building of just 100 square meters. Today, Liu’s company generates nearly 10 million yuan in annual sales.
Liu is one of thousands of returnees who have contributed to the growth of the Nankang furniture industry in recent years. According to data from the Nankang Furniture Industry Promotion Bureau, as of the end of 2011, the industry directly employed about 150,000 people and indirectly supported over 100,000 others—accounting for roughly one-third of the city's population and labor force. With 5,690 furniture companies, Nankang achieved a total output value of 8.08 billion yuan and sales revenue of 7.96 billion yuan in 2011. The industry has become a major cluster in the region and was awarded the title of “Central China Furniture Industry Base†by the China Furniture Association in July 2011.
In recent years, the Nankang furniture industry has experienced an average annual growth rate of over 30%, reaching a historic high of 88% in the previous year. However, Nankang itself lacks abundant raw materials like wood, a large labor force, or design talent. A local researcher humorously called the industry the “three noes†— no resources, no labor, and no talent.
Most of the wood used in Nankang comes from abroad, with over 70% imported. A few years ago, the city had a population of less than 300,000, but now it exceeds one million due to the influx of workers drawn by the furniture industry. Many returnees brought capital, technology, and sales networks with them.
The growth of the brand furniture industry has significantly boosted Nankang's economy. Employees in the sector earn an average monthly salary of over 3,000 yuan, while skilled workers can make more than 6,000 yuan per month. Total wages in the industry exceed 3 billion yuan annually.
In 2009, Su Rong, then secretary of the Jiangxi Provincial Party Committee, proposed that Nankang be developed into a national-level furniture market. With furniture industries in nearby regions like Guangdong shifting inland, and the national furniture industry undergoing transformation, Nankang is at a crucial stage of opportunity.
However, challenges remain. The industry still faces internal issues such as scattered operations, low-quality products, lack of innovation, and weak branding. Companies often avoid investing in talent, marketing, and R&D, leading to limited internal motivation. Environmental concerns also persist due to outdated production methods and improper factory layouts.
Externally, competition is intensifying. Industrial parks in Chengdu, Anhui, Hubei, and Guizhou are much larger and better equipped, posing a challenge to Nankang's long-term sustainability.
To address these issues, Nankang has taken advantage of regional revitalization efforts to develop a mid- to long-term plan for the furniture industry. It has focused on upgrading its platforms, including building furniture industrial parks and migrant worker entrepreneurship zones. By guiding qualified enterprises into these areas, Nankang aims to enhance overall industry standards and scale.
The “National Solid Wood Furniture Industry Famous Brand Creation Demonstration Zone†is currently being prepared. The Nankang Furniture Industry Promotion Bureau is working on setting industry standards and improving the technological level and reputation of local furniture. A new professional furniture market covering 800 acres is under construction, with a total area of 750,000 square meters, placing it among the top in the country.
