First Solar Active Illumination Signage in Suzhou

A 5-meter by 3-meter signage has been installed on the edge of the fairway, standing 2.7 meters above ground level. The sign is coated with a high-reflective film and features glowing white text that illuminates at night, with the light source positioned at the top. This self-developed solar-powered active luminescent sign, created by the city's fairway department, has recently been deployed along the Suxi Line channel. It acts like a "reflective vest" for the waterway, helping ships navigate safely during nighttime. According to Chen Guangjie, head of the Navigation Department at the Municipal Waterway Administration, one of the biggest challenges for ships at night is the lack of clear visual references. Without visible shore signs, navigation can become risky. The new solar-powered sign addresses this issue by providing clear, visible guidance even in low-light conditions, making nighttime travel safer. The Suxi Line sign is the first active luminescent signage of its kind in the province’s inland waterways. Its operation is straightforward: solar panels charge during the day and power the lights at night. This innovative system ensures visibility without relying on external power sources. The sign was placed 80 meters from Wufu Bridge on the right bank of the Suxi Line, marking the route to Wuxi and Wujiang. From a distance, it stands out with its white frame against a green background and a diagonal red column. At the top of the sign are five groups of ten solar panels. “Once fully charged, it can last up to 18 days, even on cloudy days,” said Chen. The signage measures 4.95 meters by 3.3 meters and is covered with 3M engineering-grade reflective film. Its bottom edge is 2.7 meters off the ground, with a visibility range of 200 meters during the day. At night, the visibility is even greater. The font size on the sign is 60 cm by 60 cm, and the sign is angled at 80 degrees relative to the centerline of the fairway. Although the design seems simple, the cost is significant—each unit costs around 100,000 yuan. Chen mentioned that the department will now collect data and gather feedback from boat operators to evaluate the sign's performance and cost-effectiveness. If the results are positive, the system could be expanded to other urban waterways, improving safety for more vessels.
