How to Install Wire Mesh Deer Fencing
Deer can be a real nuisance in your garden, destroying plants and ruining your hard work. The best way to protect your yard is by installing a reliable deer fence. Here's how to do it properly.
1. Choose a high-quality wire mesh fencing that is strong, rust-resistant, and UV-protected. This ensures the fence will last for years without deteriorating.
2. Keep in mind that deer are excellent jumpers. To prevent them from leaping over, install an 8-foot-high fence or use a 4-to-6-foot fence combined with a row of shrubs placed 5 feet behind the fence. This creates a visual and physical barrier that deters them effectively.
3. Before starting, walk through the area you plan to fence. Take note of where trees are located, as using them as natural supports can help maintain a more natural look while also reinforcing the fence.
4. If there are gaps between trees, insert 12-foot posts at regular intervals. The ideal spacing between posts or trees should be around 20 feet. Make sure the posts are deep enough into the ground to withstand wind, rain, and potential animal pressure.
5. When stretching the wire mesh, it’s best to have at least two people to ensure it’s pulled tight and secure. Use fence staples or roofing nails to fasten the mesh to the posts and trees. These are the most common and effective fasteners for this type of installation.
6. Always install the fence on the outside of the trees and posts. This helps prevent animals from bumping into the fence and knocking it down, especially if they’re running or jumping near it.
7. To stop deer from slipping under the fence, attach the bottom edge with hooked ground stakes every 5 to 6 feet. This keeps the mesh tight against the ground and prevents access from below.
8. Add a top wire strand along the top of the fence to increase its strength and durability. This makes the structure more rigid and less likely to sag over time.
9. For added visibility, tie white strips (about 2 inches wide) every 10 feet at the 4-foot level. These serve as a visual warning to deer, making them aware of the fence’s presence and reducing the chance of them trying to jump over it.
By following these steps, you’ll create a strong, long-lasting deer fence that protects your garden while blending naturally with your landscape.
