Processing quality and processing effects cannot be replaced

Beijing Nankou Rail Transportation Machinery Co., Ltd. (Nanji Company), located at the foot of the Yanshan Mountains, was established in 1906 by the renowned Chinese railway engineer Zhan Tianyou. Today, it is a leading manufacturer in China’s rail industry, specializing in integrated systems for railway turnouts and compressed air sources. The company operates three dedicated R&D and production bases, including gear factories, wind power plants, parts workshops, and foundries, responsible for producing mainframes and accessories for locomotives. Among these, the gear factory is the largest, employing nearly 300 staff members and generating an annual output value of approximately 150 million yuan, accounting for one-third of the company's total revenue. The factory produces a wide range of products, from gear components for locomotives to specialized speed boxes used in wind power and oil fields. However, its core product remains the locomotive traction gear—a high-speed, heavy-duty component essential for electric and diesel-electric locomotives. The HXD2 high-power electric locomotive traction gear, developed for the "Harmony" series, is one of the key products of Nanji’s gear factory. This model, jointly developed by Alstom of France and Datong Electric Locomotive Co. Ltd. under the CNR Group, is based on Alstom’s Prima platform and is designed for heavy freight operations with a maximum power of 10,000 kW and a top speed of 120 km/h. Tan Jianzhong, Deputy Director of the Gear Factory, recalls the challenges faced during the initial production of HXD2 traction gears. “The requirements were extremely high—precision, complex processing, and strict inspection standards. At that time, our equipment wasn’t fully up to the task,” he said. To overcome these challenges, the factory introduced advanced CNC machines and partnered with tool suppliers like Walter, whose expertise in cutting tools proved critical. Walter’s high-efficiency drills, such as the B4015.F20.21, 0.Z02.105R model, helped solve deep-hole machining issues, which were previously unachievable due to the material hardness and geometric complexity of the HXD2 gear. These tools not only improved accuracy but also enhanced efficiency, enabling smoother and faster production. Over the years, Nanji has become a major supplier for the HXD2 series, providing thousands of gear sets annually. Its products are exported to France, where they are used by Alstom, and the partnership with Walter continues to strengthen. Tan emphasized that while other tools may offer similar functions, the quality and performance of Walter’s products remain unmatched. Today, the Nanji Gear Factory is preparing for new projects, including the development of gears for upcoming high-speed trains operating at 250 km/h and even 300 km/h. As the demand for higher precision and performance increases, the factory continues to rely on trusted partners like Walter to meet the evolving challenges of modern rail manufacturing.
