It contains 55-65% crude protein and 2.6-12% fat, with the protein content in both the original material and dry powder being comparable or even slightly higher than that of fresh fish, fish meal, and meat and bone meal. This protein is rich in 17 essential amino acids, with each amino acid present in higher concentrations than in fish meal. Specifically, the levels of essential amino acids and methionine are 2.3 and 2.7 times greater than those in fish meal, while lysine is 2.6 times higher. The total essential amino acid content in the original and dried maggots reaches 44.09% and 43.83%, respectively, surpassing the FAO/WHO recommended value by 40%. They can be used directly as live bait or mixed into feeds for species like crabs, frogs, fish, shrimp, scorpions, and others. Experiments showed that feeding crabs with live maggots led to an average weight gain of 4.53 grams and a 160.27% weight gain rate, which is 3.8 times higher than those fed egg yolk. This demonstrates the effectiveness of maggots in enhancing growth and productivity in various farming systems.
