BASF Engineering Plastics Ultramid® for new steering column top switch modules

HC Plastics News: Valeo steering column top switch module with BASF engineering plastics Ultramid® SI and Ultradur®

Integrated component design for rear-wheel drive models of the BMW 3 Series-7 Series

Safety, driving pleasure and aesthetics – not only the steering wheel, but also the steering column top switch module that connects the steering wheel and control unit. French car supplier Valeo has developed a new steering column top switch module: its housing and rocker are made of BASF engineering plastics Ultramid® (PA: polyamide) and Ultradur® (PBT: polybutylene terephthalate) ) Manufacturing, which is about 20% lighter than previous products, and has excellent surface quality, UV resistance, and excellent physical properties. This module has been used by the BMW Group for the rear-wheel drive models of the 3 Series to 7 Series.

Jochen Fößel, Valeo's component optimization and injection molding, said: "Our steering column is based on a proven integrated design and is highly adaptable to the BMW 3 Series to 7 Series interior architecture. With excellent function and beautiful appearance, the steering column top switch module, we have selected the right materials from BASF's many engineering plastics; in addition, BASF's services in parts design, material development and processing also provide us with a great deal. Help.” The module's indicator and wiper rocker use BASF's specially designed polyamide Ultramid® B3EG10 SI (SI is surface enhanced). The two-part core module features PBTUltradur® B 4520 and Ultradur® B 4300 G4. The latter is processed by the Mucell® process at Buck Spritzgussteile Formenbau in Flachsland, Germany.

Surface polyamide for rocker combines mechanical properties with aesthetic appearance

The special feature of the indicator and wiper rocker is the use of BASF Ultramid® B3EG10SI material for excellent surface quality and stability. With a glass fiber content of up to 50%, this polyamide achieves an ideal balance between mechanical properties and visual effects and is therefore used to produce surface components with high requirements for appearance, stability and UV resistance. Originally developed for the furniture industry, the material is now widely used in a variety of designs and office chairs. Jochen Fößel recalls: “We were a little surprised when BASF introduced us to this furniture material. But we were conquered when we saw its uniform, shiny surface. Later our tests proved the material excellence. Mechanical properties and UV resistance.” Valeo tested the tolerance of interior components in accordance with DIN EN ISO 1043--1/GS93016.

Customized Ultradur® for two-piece housings for steering column top switch modules

The two-piece core of the steering column top switch module is made of a variety of Ultradur® materials, and the lower half of the carrier shell is made of 20% glass-reinforced Ultrad® B 4300 G4 material. The material is used by Buck Spritzgussteile Formenbau, Germany, using MuCell®. Process processing. In the physical molding process, the polymer melt is filled with nitrogen in the injection molding process to form a foam structure, the weight of the material is reduced by about 10%, the dimensional stability is also improved, and the high rigidity and chemical resistance of the polymer itself are not Any impact. The upper half of the housing for the steering wheel features an unreinforced Ultradur® B 4520 PBT with the advantages of extremely low water absorption and excellent dimensional stability. In addition, the material maintains its aesthetic appearance and excellent dimensional stability even in high temperature environments. Balanced material properties ensure that the steering wheel is securely mounted to the steering column top switch module.

Steel Pole

Steel poles are commonly used to carry several types of electric power lines, distribution lines and lighting system.  Distribution lines carry power from local substations to customers. They generally carry voltages from 4.6 to 33kV for distances up to 30 miles, and include transformers to step the voltage down from the primary voltage to the lower secondary voltage used by the customer. A service drop carries this lower voltage to the customer's premises.
