International research team develops a new type of photocatalytic material that efficiently converts carbon dioxide into

An international research team has recently developed a new type of photocatalytic material that can reduce carbon dioxide to carbon monoxide without producing other impurity byproducts. This technology can be used to efficiently convert carbon dioxide into clean fuels in the future.

The large amount of carbon dioxide emitted from the world has caused problems such as the greenhouse effect. The scientific community has been exploring how to recover and convert excess carbon dioxide in the air into energy or other useful substances. There were some ways to use catalysts to reduce carbon dioxide but produced a mixture of gases and liquids.

U.S. Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory’s Niu Kaiyang et al. and their international counterparts reported in a new issue of the US “Scientific Progress” magazine that they synthesize a sponge-like catalyst of nickel and organic molecules that can adsorb carbon dioxide in the air.

The researchers placed this high-activity catalytic material in a photocatalytic system in the laboratory and excited the visible electrons to excite the electrons in the material and reduce carbon dioxide to carbon monoxide. Experiments have shown that at room temperature for 1 hour reaction, 1 gram of catalyst can produce 400 milliliters of carbon monoxide and is high-purity carbon monoxide without producing other gases such as hydrogen, methane, and the like as in some other methods.

Niu Kaiyang said that converting carbon dioxide to carbon monoxide is not new, but it can convert carbon dioxide into almost 100% carbon monoxide, an unprecedented technological advancement. The high-purity carbon monoxide obtained by reducing carbon dioxide can be further converted into clean fuels such as ethanol and acetic acid.

The researchers said that this study is still in the basic research stage. They hope that this new type of photocatalytic material can be applied in industrial production in the future, and solar energy can be used to trigger catalysts to efficiently convert carbon dioxide into clean energy.
