“Furniture that appears flawless often has hidden damage. Whether it's displayed in a showroom or shipped from the factory, most of it has been repaired at some point.” A few days ago, a senior furniture repair specialist revealed this secret about the industry.

Furniture restoration, also known as “furniture beauty,” involves fixing imperfections such as cracks, dents, scratches, and deformations on new or used furniture. Professionals use techniques like sanding, filling, coloring, and polishing to make the repairs blend seamlessly with the original finish. Some experts even offer leather furniture restoration services.

In a home, Master Zhang demonstrated how he fixed a small dent on a TV cabinet and a chipped corner. After examining the damage, he used sandpaper to reveal the wood’s natural color. Then, he mixed a filler that matched the furniture’s color, applied it to the damaged area, and secured it with 502 glue. After drying with a hair dryer, he polished the spot multiple times until it looked almost perfect. Only a close inspection could reveal the slight difference in color from the rest of the piece.

Master Zhang explained that in Harbin, there are dozens of professionals who specialize in furniture restoration. Due to the high demand and limited skilled workers, the cost isn’t low—repairing a single blemish can cost between 50 to 100 yuan, and more complex or larger repairs can be pricier. These specialists can earn tens of thousands of yuan per month.

“Almost every piece of furniture has ‘injuries’,” Master Zhang said. “From manufacturing to transportation, display, and distribution, furniture is prone to damage. Most of them have been repaired before reaching the consumer.” He advised buyers to pay attention to areas that might have been covered up or tampered with, especially load-bearing parts. If they find any signs of previous repairs, they should immediately request a refund or compensation from the seller.

When asked how to identify whether a piece of furniture has been restored, Master Zhang suggested checking for signs of glue residue on key parts, ensuring the color is consistent, feeling the surface for smoothness, and smelling for strong chemical odors from the repair glue.
