Dutch teenager invents solar energy marine recycling ship

In a world increasingly impacted by environmental challenges, the issue of marine pollution has become one of the most urgent global concerns. Among the many threats to our oceans, plastic waste stands out as particularly damaging, endangering marine life and posing risks to human health and safety. In response to this growing crisis, 19-year-old Dutch student Bojan Slater has introduced an innovative solution: a massive ocean garbage collector designed to clean up vast amounts of plastic from the seas. Slater, a student at Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands, has been working on this project since 2012. His concept involves a fleet of clean recycling ships shaped like arrows, equipped with floating barriers that capture plastic debris. These vessels are designed to move with ocean currents, allowing them to collect waste efficiently without disrupting marine ecosystems. The floating gates, made from durable and eco-friendly materials, allow marine life such as plankton and fish to pass through safely, ensuring minimal environmental impact. The ships are powered by renewable energy sources, including solar and tidal power, making them not only sustainable but also cost-effective. According to Slater, the initial investment is manageable, and after that, the operating costs are nearly zero. Additionally, the project could generate significant economic returns—up to $500 million annually—through the sale of recycled plastics. Slater envisions placing these ships in all five oceans, where they would drift for years, gradually cleaning up the majority of plastic waste. On his personal website, he emphasizes the importance of resource recycling and reducing plastic use. He believes that if widely implemented, this technology could make a real difference in protecting our oceans. His project has already earned recognition, winning several innovation awards. To bring his vision to life, Slater has launched the "Ocean Cleanup Fund" and is seeking partners who share his passion for environmental sustainability. With creativity, determination, and a focus on long-term solutions, Slater is proving that young minds can lead the way in tackling some of the world’s biggest challenges.
