Camellia Care Tips:
Light is essential for camellias, but they prefer partial shade during the hot summer months. Once autumn arrives and temperatures drop, it's time to gradually increase light exposure as the plant enters its flower bud development phase. During winter, place your camellia in a bright, sunny spot. If the indoor light is too dim, the plant may struggle to grow and become more vulnerable to pests and diseases.
Temperature is another important factor. Camellias thrive in warm conditions and are sensitive to cold. Keep the room temperature above 5°C (41°F). If the temperature stays between 10°C and 15°C (50°F–59°F), you can encourage blooming around the Spring Festival, with flowers lasting until March. In winter, indoor air tends to be dry, so misting the leaves regularly helps create a more humid environment. However, avoid misting on rainy days to prevent excess moisture buildup.
Watering in winter should be done carefully. Depending on the indoor temperature, water every three days or so, keeping the soil consistently moist but not soggy. Avoid overwatering. Let tap water sit for a day or two before using it to allow chlorine to evaporate. Adding a small amount of ferrous sulfate to the water can improve its quality and help prevent yellowing leaves.
Fertilizing is also crucial. When repotting or changing the pot, add a base fertilizer at the bottom of the container. During autumn and winter, when flower buds are forming, apply a diluted liquid fertilizer once a week, along with a couple of applications of phosphorus and potassium-rich fertilizer. Too much nitrogen can cause the buds to burn off, so reduce or stop fertilizing after flowering to let the plant rest.
With proper care, your camellia will remain healthy and produce beautiful blooms throughout the winter months. Don't forget to monitor the plant regularly and adjust your care routine as needed based on its growth and environmental conditions.
