Camellia Care Tips:
Light: Camellias are semi-shade plants and require protection from direct sunlight during the summer. Once autumn arrives and temperatures drop, they enter the flower bud development phase, so gradually increase their exposure to light. In winter, place your camellia in a sunny spot. If the indoor light is too low, the plant may grow weak and become more susceptible to pests and diseases.
Temperature: Camellias prefer warm conditions and are sensitive to cold. The indoor temperature should not drop below 5°C. If the room stays between 10°C and 15°C, with proper care, your camellia can bloom around the Spring Festival and continue flowering until March. Humidity is also important—indoor air tends to be dry in winter, so mist the leaves regularly to create a humid microclimate. However, avoid misting on rainy days to prevent fungal issues.
Watering: In winter, watering frequency depends on the indoor temperature. Water every three days or so, keeping the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Avoid overwatering or letting water sit in the saucer. If using tap water, let it sit for a day or two to allow chlorine to evaporate. Adding a small amount of ferrous sulfate to the water can help improve its quality and promote healthier growth.
Fertilization: Camellias benefit from regular feeding. When repotting or transplanting, add a layer of slow-release fertilizer at the bottom of the pot. During autumn and winter, when flower buds are forming, apply a diluted liquid fertilizer once a week. Use a phosphorus and potassium-rich fertilizer one or two times to support blooming. Excessive nitrogen can cause bud burn, so reduce or stop fertilizing after flowering to avoid overstimulation.
Additional Tip: Pruning can help maintain the shape of your camellia and encourage better blooming. Remove any dead or damaged branches after flowering. Also, keep an eye out for common pests like aphids or spider mites, and treat them promptly with insecticidal soap if needed.
