Accessories play a crucial role in the performance and reliability of liquid chromatography systems. Common components include screws and ferrules, which are designed to connect and seal tubing. While their function seems straightforward, selecting and using them correctly can be quite complex. To accurately describe an accessory, consider the following: the shape of the receiving hole (conical or flat), the tube size, and the screw thread type, such as 10-32, 1/4-28, etc. Accessories can also be categorized by measurement system (metric or imperial) or by material type.
**Stainless Steel Fittings**
Stainless steel fittings are widely used in analytical equipment due to their ability to withstand high pressure and compatibility with most solvents. Despite their versatility, they come in various sizes and shapes, often differing between manufacturers (see Figures 1 and 2). To ensure proper function and longevity, it is best to use accessories specifically designed for your instrument’s ports. To install stainless steel fittings, follow these steps: First, place the screws and ferrules onto the tube in sequence. Then, insert the tube into the corresponding port and tighten the screw by hand, ensuring the tube reaches the bottom of the fitting. Finally, use a wrench to turn the 3/4-inch nut. Note: Once the ferrule is compressed, it becomes permanently attached to the tube and should only be used in the specific port it was installed in. Improper installation may lead to dead volume or leaks. For pre-tightened stainless steel fittings, we recommend tightening the 1/4 or 3/4-inch nut with a wrench after hand-tightening. If a leak occurs, gradually tighten the fitting until the leak stops. However, if you need to rotate the fitting more than one full turn after hand-tightening, it may be worn out and should be replaced. Over-tightening can damage the fitting and compromise the system.
**Polymer Material Accessories**
In contrast to stainless steel fittings, polymer-based accessories are more universal and easier to use. They are not permanently attached to the tube and typically require no tools—just finger-tightening. These fittings are made from various polymer materials, offering different price points and solvent compatibility options. They are becoming increasingly popular due to their convenience and cost-effectiveness.
**If Your Accessory Leaks**
Here are some common causes and solutions for leaks: 1. Ensure the tube is fully inserted into the fitting before tightening. If the fitting is tightened too soon, the screw and ferrule may need to be reinstalled. 2. The accessory may not be tight enough. Even for reusable fittings, a wrench is often required for proper sealing. Avoid using excessive force, as this can damage the fitting. 3. Incompatible parts can cause leaks. Always check that your screws and ferrules match each other and the system. Consider using universal hand-rotating fittings to avoid this issue. 4. Check the condition of the screws and ferrules. Repeated use can cause deformation, leading to poor sealing. Keep spare parts on hand for quick replacement. 5. Leaks can sometimes originate from the receiving holes, especially when connected to stainless steel fittings. Inspect for scratches or wear and replace damaged parts promptly. 6. Incompatibility between the accessory material and the mobile phase can cause leaks and permanent damage. Always verify compatibility before use.
**System Leak Warning Signs**
Before visible leakage appears, your system may give early warning signs: 1) No flow or pressure. 2) Increased pump pressure without any flow. 3) Baseline noise. 4) Baseline drift. These symptoms may indicate other issues, but they often point to a faulty connection. Starting with the accessories is a logical first step, as they are easy to inspect and replace. Additionally, they are usually the most affordable components in the system. Shanghai Qite Analytical Instrument Co., Ltd.: http://
