Abstract A research team from the University of Strathclyde in the UK has recently introduced a groundbreaking multi-functional Raman laser that leverages the unique properties of synthetic diamond. This innovative laser not only produces a higher energy beam than existing models but also offers a broader range of wavelengths, making it more versatile for various applications. The technology is expected to open new doors in fields such as dermatology, ophthalmology, environmental monitoring, and aerospace engineering. The project was funded by the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC).

While Australia had previously explored diamond-based Raman laser technology, the breakthroughs made by the University of Strathclyde stand out in two major areas. First, it is the first tunable diamond Raman laser, allowing the color of the emitted light to be adjusted based on specific needs. For instance, treating vascular lesions requires high-energy yellow or orange beams that can target the lesion without harming surrounding tissues — something conventional Raman lasers have struggled to achieve. This flexibility is made possible by the exceptional optical properties of diamonds, which enable a much wider spectrum of colors than traditional lasers. Second, the new laser operates continuously rather than in short pulses. Short-pulse lasers are often unsuitable for medical use due to the risk of damaging delicate tissues, such as those in the eye. The continuous operation of this diamond Raman laser makes it ideal for treating sensitive conditions with greater precision. Professor Martin Dawson, who led the project, emphasized that the new laser can generate light across the entire electromagnetic spectrum — from ultraviolet to visible to infrared. This capability addresses many limitations of previous laser technologies, enabling more effective and diverse applications. Conventional Raman lasers typically use silicon, which has significant drawbacks in terms of thermal conductivity and optical performance. These limitations restrict the energy output and wavelength range of the laser. In contrast, diamond's superior thermal management, hardness, and optical characteristics make it an excellent material for high-performance lasers. Alan Kemp, the lead researcher, highlighted that the use of diamond single crystals in laser technology marks a major advancement. Unlike traditional Raman lasers that required 3–6 cm of material, the new system only needs 2–6 mm of diamond to produce the same amount of light. This miniaturization opens up new possibilities for lasers in space-constrained environments like aerospace and medical devices. The team has collaborated closely with Element Six, a global leader in synthetic diamond production. Compared to natural diamonds, synthetic ones are more cost-effective and offer better control over optical properties, making them ideal for advanced laser systems.
