Peacock Cultivation Management Method:
(1) Site Preparation: Begin by preparing the soil and applying a base fertilizer. Ensure proper land preparation to allow for efficient use of fertilizers, such as using 1000 kg of chicken manure per mu. Cover the surface with soil, creating raised beds about 30 cm high, 100 cm wide, and 20 m long. Make sure drainage ditches are clear so that water can be removed quickly after rain.
(2) Planting: Once the site is ready, plant seedlings in the prepared area. Dig small holes before planting, placing four seedlings in each hole. Maintain a spacing of 30x30 cm between plants. After planting, water the roots thoroughly to ensure good soil contact and maintain moisture to promote healthy growth.
(3) Maintenance: Immediately after planting, perform weeding to prevent soil compaction and weed growth. As the plants grow, cultivate the soil 2-3 times before the canopy closes to keep the area free of weeds. Once the canopy closes, reduce watering and avoid further cultivation, as it will help reduce evaporation. In the early stages, apply a nitrogen-based fertilizer every seven days. During the vigorous growth phase, when flower buds begin to form, apply 50 kg of compound fertilizer per acre and spray foliar fertilizer once a week. Stop fertilizing once the buds open.
(4) Lighting: White peafowl is a short-day plant. After autumn, when daylight hours decrease, the plant stops growing vertically and focuses on underground development. To encourage upward growth, extend the lighting period. Start manually adding light one month after planting. Use a 100W or 60W bulb placed 80 cm above the plants, covering an area of 4 square meters. Increase the lighting time by 4 hours daily for 40 days, ending 60 days before the Spring Festival. You can start lighting when it gets dark or 4 hours before dawn.
(5) Harvesting: For longer-lasting cut flowers, harvest when the top bud is about 10 cm tall. Remove other buds to ensure quality. If it's hot, cut the flowers during cooler times of the day. After cutting, sort and package them, wrapping 20 stems in paper and storing or shipping them for sale.
Winter presents a challenging time for peacock grass due to low temperatures and humidity. According to practical experience, using two layers of plastic film results in only a 25% survival rate, while three layers can increase survival rates to 95.22%. When seedlings have 2-3 pairs of leaves, they can be transplanted into small pots. After transplanting, follow regular watering and fertilization practices. Since they are grown in a protected environment, ensure proper ventilation after each watering or fertilizing to avoid excessive humidity, which can cause root rot. After the Spring Festival, as temperatures rise, the peacock grass enters its rapid growth phase. At this point, gradually remove the protective film and intensify water and fertilizer management to support healthy development.
