Abstract On the evening of July 1st, Sanan Optoelectronics announced that in line with the goals set by Anxi County Government to accelerate the development of high-tech emerging industrial clusters and promote the growth of the LED photoelectric industry chain within the region, the company has been allocated a financial subsidy of 50 million yuan under the "Technical Three" program. This funding is intended for the sapphire substrate project, and the amount has already been received. The initiative reflects the government's strong support for the advancement of advanced materials and semiconductor technologies in the local area.
The choice of substrate material plays a critical role in the fabrication of LED chips, as it directly impacts the performance, efficiency, and cost of the final product. When selecting a suitable substrate, factors such as thermal conductivity, lattice matching, and cost must be carefully considered. Currently, there are three main types of substrates used in the industry: sapphire (Al₂O₃), silicon (Si), and silicon carbide (SiC). Each has its own advantages and limitations depending on the application.
Sapphire substrates remain the most widely used option, especially for GaN-based devices. One of the key reasons for this is the maturity of sapphire production technology, which ensures high-quality epitaxial layers and reliable device performance. Additionally, sapphire exhibits excellent thermal stability, making it ideal for high-temperature growth processes. Its high mechanical strength also makes it easy to handle during manufacturing, and it can withstand various cleaning procedures without significant degradation.
Another important feature of sapphire is its extreme hardness, second only to diamond among natural materials. However, this property also presents challenges during the manufacturing process, as the material needs to be thinned and cut from an initial thickness of around 400 micrometers down to approximately 100 micrometers. Despite these challenges, sapphire remains the preferred choice for many LED manufacturers due to its overall performance and reliability in large-scale production.
