Volvo V60 can be plugged into the trunk solar charging station
In the near future, electric and hybrid vehicles might come equipped with their own portable solar charging stations. These units could be folded up and deployed from the car’s trunk, offering a convenient and eco-friendly way to recharge on the go. The first such system is set to make its debut in Rome later this year, integrated into the Volvo V60 diesel hybrid model. The Pure Tension Pavilion, a solar-powered charging station, was chosen as the winning design in the 2013 Pure Volvo Pavilion competition. This innovative structure challenges traditional exhibition booths by combining practicality, aesthetics, and sustainability. It not only provides shelter but also functions as a solar charging unit. Built using a tensioned film design, the pavilion features HDPE mesh membranes, carbon fiber frames, and embedded photovoltaic panels. When not in use, it can be fully folded and stored inside the V60’s trunk, making it highly portable and versatile. Developed through a collaboration between Synthesis Design + Architecture, Buro Happold, and US Fabric Images, the product will be launched in Rome in September 2013. While it's still in the experimental phase, it represents a bold step toward integrating renewable energy solutions directly into vehicles. This concept highlights how automotive innovation is evolving beyond just power sources—now, cars are becoming part of the energy solution themselves. (Compiled by Tao Shuhua)
