Instant charging technology allows electric buses to be charged quickly during passenger boarding and alighting.
Imagine a city where public transport runs smoothly without emitting any pollution, without needing overhead power lines, and without long waiting times for recharging. This is no longer just a dream—thanks to a groundbreaking charging system that could soon become a reality. The technology enables electric buses to be fully charged in as little as 15 seconds, making them more efficient and practical than ever before.
This innovation, developed by ABB, will be tested on large electric buses in Geneva, Switzerland, as part of the TOSA pilot project. According to ABB, these buses can receive up to 400 kilowatts of power in just 15 seconds at designated stops. This means that while passengers board or disembark, the bus can quickly top up its battery, allowing it to continue running with minimal downtime.
Claes Rytoft, ABB’s Chief Technology Officer, explained, “With this rapid charging technology, we are paving the way for a new generation of electric buses that don’t rely on overhead lines. This project could lead to more flexible and cost-effective public transport systems, helping reduce urban pollution and noise.â€
The quick-charging system uses a laser-guided arm that connects to the bus’s charging port. It can be seamlessly integrated into bus stations, allowing for efficient and automated charging. This technology has the potential to replace traditional tram and subway systems in cities, eliminating the need for unsightly overhead wires and improving the urban landscape.
The TOSA project is designed to optimize high-frequency bus routes in key urban areas. In Geneva, the electricity used for the pilot comes from hydropower, which is considered a zero-carbon solution. However, it's worth noting that not all regions have access to clean energy sources, so the environmental impact may vary depending on the local grid. The project aims to operate buses between Geneva Airport and the International Exhibition Center, demonstrating the feasibility of this innovative approach in real-world conditions.
