This groundbreaking charging technology allows electric buses to charge quickly during passenger boarding and alighting.
Imagine a city where public transport runs smoothly without pollution, without the need for overhead wires, and without long waiting times for recharging. Well, this is no longer just a dream. A new charging system is making it a reality. With the ability to "instantly charge" an electric bus battery in as little as 15 seconds, this innovation is set to transform urban mobility. The technology, developed by ABB, will soon be tested on large electric buses in Geneva, Switzerland, as part of the TOSA pilot project.
According to ABB, these buses can receive up to 400 kilowatts of power in just 15 seconds at designated stops. This means that while passengers board or exit, the bus can quickly recharge its battery. In just three to four minutes, the bus can be fully charged, allowing it to continue its route without interruption. Claes Rytoft, ABB's Chief Technology Officer, said, “With this rapid charging technology, we are piloting a new generation of electric buses that don’t require overhead lines. This project paves the way for more flexible and cost-effective public transport infrastructure, while also reducing urban pollution and noise.â€
The fast-charging system uses a laser-guided arm that connects to the bus’s charging port, making it easy to integrate with existing bus stations. This technology could one day replace traditional trams and subways in cities, eliminating the need for unsightly overhead power lines. It’s designed specifically for high-frequency bus routes in busy urban areas. Since the Geneva pilot project is powered by hydropower, it’s been labeled a “zero carbon emission†solution. However, it's worth noting that not all regions rely solely on clean energy, so the environmental impact depends on the local power source. The TOSA project aims to operate between Geneva Airport and the International Exhibition Center, showcasing the potential of this game-changing technology.
