University students from the University of Leicester in England are exploring innovative ways to create safer flame retardants by using genetically modified bacteria. Their goal is to develop a new, non-flammable version of expanded polystyrene (EPS), which is commonly used in packaging and insulation materials.
This year, an undergraduate team from the university has joined the International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) competition, marking their second consecutive participation after successfully entering last year. The team is working on a groundbreaking project that combines synthetic biology with material science.
Their main idea is to use DNA as a flame retardant additive. By engineering bacteria to produce large quantities of DNA more efficiently, they aim to enhance the fire resistance of polystyrene products. These DNA-rich bacteria will then be incorporated into the polystyrene during the manufacturing process, potentially reducing its flammability without compromising its structural properties.
In addition to improving flame resistance, the team is also investigating how DNA technology can help recycle polystyrene waste. They are developing a method to break down used polystyrene into reusable materials suitable for 3D printing applications. Furthermore, the students are working on genetically modified bacteria that can degrade polystyrene more effectively. Their long-term vision includes creating a biodegradable alternative to traditional plastics.
