Grinding of SKF bearing fine graphite sealing ring

**Grinding of the Fine Graphite Sealing Ring of SKF Bearings** Home > Bearing Knowledge > Grinding of the Fine Graphite Sealing Ring of SKF Bearings Source: China Bearing Network | Time: June 4, 2013 This article discusses the grinding process for fine graphite sealing rings used in aviation oil pumps. These parts are made from M106H graphite, a material known for its brittleness and high epoxy resin content. The sealing surface (B side) requires extremely high precision, with a surface roughness of Ra 0.1 μm, parallelism of 0.01 mm, and flatness of 0.0006 mm. Traditional methods such as fine turning were insufficient, and conventional grinding was not feasible due to the material's properties. A detailed process was developed through experimentation. The steps included roughing, slot milling, finishing, and finally grinding the B surface. However, during initial trials, the flatness of the ground surface was found to be 4–7 times higher than required, reaching up to 0.0024–0.0042 mm. To address this, a micro-layer kneading method was introduced. The process involved using cast iron plates with embedded micropowder and kerosene. Three low-alloy high-phosphorus cast iron plates were used, with W20 and W7 micropowders applied in a specific sequence to ensure even surface finish. After coarse and fine grinding, the plates were polished using chrome oxide paste to reduce surface roughness below Ra 0.1 μm. A thin layer of kerosene and fine powder was then applied to the plate to create a cutting fluid suitable for graphite. The final step involved placing the part on the treated plate and performing a spiral motion to achieve the desired flatness and smoothness. After grinding, all debris was carefully removed, and the oil residue was wiped off to prevent degradation of the surface quality. This process significantly improved the performance of the graphite sealing ring, meeting the strict requirements of the SKF bearing application. It also highlights the importance of careful preparation and precise control in working with brittle materials like graphite.
