Plant bacterial wilt and blight, often referred to as "plant cancer," is one of the most destructive plant diseases globally. It causes severe damage, wide spread, and massive economic losses. The development and industrialization of the high-efficiency microbial pesticide "Golden Kill" mark a breakthrough in combating soil-borne diseases like bacterial wilt and blight. As reported by the China Pesticide Network, this innovative product has been widely recognized for its effectiveness and potential in revolutionizing crop protection.
Developed through collaborative efforts between East China University of Science and Technology and Shanghai Zeyuan Marine Biotechnology Co., Ltd., "Golden Kill" (trade name: KANGDILEIDE Gold Dry) was the first microbial pesticide based on *Bacillus polymyxa* to be successfully commercialized both domestically and internationally. Supported by several key national projects such as the 863 National Modern Agricultural Technology Program, the National Agricultural Science and Technology Achievements Transformation Fund, and the Shanghai Science and Technology Research Project, the product has achieved significant scientific and technological progress.
The product holds independent intellectual property rights, including Chinese invention patent ZL02151019.9 and international patents WO2004/050861 and US2006/0018883A1. It was also recognized by the Shanghai Science and Technology Commission as an advanced high-tech achievement. After undergoing four years of rigorous pesticide registration tests, it received temporary registration from the Ministry of Agriculture on March 8, 2004, under the number LS20040563, for use against tobacco, tomato, eggplant, and pepper bacterial diseases.
In October 2004, it was recommended by China Tobacco Production and Marketing Company as the only biological pesticide for controlling tobacco bacterial wilt. It continued to gain recognition from various tobacco companies across the country, being selected as the best treatment option in Hunan and Yunnan, and as an effective agent for 2006 in China.
As the first achievement of the National Tenth Five-Year Plan, "Golden Kill" is the world's first microbial pesticide using *Bacillus polymyxa* as its active ingredient. It is considered the most promising solution for managing plant bacterial wilt and blight.
Key features include its broad-spectrum control over bacterial and fungal soil-borne diseases, as well as its effectiveness on plant wilts, blights, and other related issues. Field trials show up to 65–85% control efficacy on crops like tomatoes, eggplants, peppers, watermelons, cucumbers, and bananas. It also performs well against taro soft rot, tomato mites, and various root and leaf diseases.
Long-term experiments have demonstrated three major benefits: (1) effective control of soil-borne bacterial and fungal diseases via root irrigation; (2) efficient foliar application for leaf diseases; and (3) significant growth promotion and yield increase. In some cases, yields increased by as much as 493%, even when disease incidence reached 97%.
Additionally, the product promotes plant growth, with field plants growing 10–30 cm taller than the control group. Even without visible disease, it can boost yields by 27.5%, primarily during the pre-harvest period. This makes "Golden Kill" a highly valuable tool for sustainable agriculture and disease management.
